Square Peg Sessions
The Butter Market is very excited to announce the commencement of The Square Peg Sessions.
The Square Peg Session will be a celebration of Ireland’s alternative music scene and will kickstart a series of performances showcasing artists from around the country.
The first instalment of the Square Peg Sessions will take place on May 13th and will be sponsored by Torc Brewing company. The line-up will consist of Mantua, Pôt Pot and I Dreamed I Dream.
Mantua is an experimental music project from Elaine Malone (Hex, Soft Focus). Using harmonium, voice and affected guitars, Malone explores environmental decline, keening, symbolism in the forms of Virgin Mary holograms and the decay of nature. Other influences include the work of Jodorowsky, bogs and death.
Pôt-Pot is a four-piece Cork/Lisbon psych/krautrock band. Inspired by Neu!, CAN, Spacemen 3 and others, drones, repetition and motorik beats are pôt-pot’s tools for operating. They release their first EP “Ode to A” on Blindhead Recordings in May 2023. All songs only contain the note A, a love letter to 440hz. Pôt-pot is: Michael Olver Smith (guitar), Joe Armitage (bass), Elaine Malone (harmonium, vocals) and Mark Waldron-Hyden (drums, synths, vocals).
I Dreamed I Dream are a genre-blending band from Cork. They are influenced by everything ranging from shoegaze and dreampop to classic girl groups. Since their first gig, supporting Silverbacks at Spilt Milk festival in late 2021, IDID have gone on to play with the likes of post-punk provocateur Gina Birch and Cork heroes The Frank and Walters, as well as playing Cork Midsummer Festival and Féile na Grèine. Described by the Evening Echo/Examiners Mike McGrath-Bryan as “emerging experimentalists” and with a “healthy disregard for musical convention”, I Dreamed I Dream are fast becoming one of Ireland’s most captivating bands.
