Kenmare Butter Market

untitled 3

Originally constructed in the mid-1800s as the Kenmare Butter Market, this iconic building underwent a transformation in the 1960s, evolving into a vibrant dance hall. Now it has become much more than just a relic of the past; it’s a thriving hub of cultural activity in the heart of Kenmare town.

Steeped in history and brimming with character, the Butter Market stands as a testament to the rich heritage of Ireland. Its storied past adds depth and charm to its modern-day incarnation as one of the country’s premier exhibition spaces. The Butter Market has transformed into an exceptional art gallery, showcasing a diverse range of works from local and international artists alike.

But the Butter Market isn’t just about visual arts; it’s also a dynamic music venue that offers something for every taste. With its spacious layout and versatile design, it has the capacity to host an array of musical events, from intimate acoustic performances to electrifying rock concerts. The Butter Market has become a sought-after destination for music lovers of all genres, from classical and folk to jazz and beyond.

The Butter Market continues to be a cultural cornerstone of Kenmare, serving as a gathering place for the community and a platform for artistic expression. Its legacy as a symbol of creativity and innovation is sure to endure for generations to come.

Our inaugural exhibition ‘Staccato’ in July 2021 was an unveiling of new work by established Irish artists, Bridget Flannery, Paul Hughes and Paddy Lennon. Since then we have showcased work by artists, Ciaran McCoy (aka Pigsy), Regina Bartsch and Michael Hales. 2022 began with an exhibition of nine emerging female artists, followed by a retrospective by David Fox. Our first dedicated exhibition of contemporary sculpture by 34 of Irelands established Sculptors is currently open. Kenmare Butter Market is committed to showcasing Irish and international professional artists.

The Butter Market not only is an excellent art gallery, it is also a great music venue which has the capacity to host a wide range of musical events from classical, folk, jazz to rock. Please see our  technical specification.
